 INTRODUCTION

Life Science is an umbrella term used to describe a range of fields in science that center around biological systems, ranging from engineering to healthcare. With the rise of technology in biological sciences the popularity of life sciences is increasing too. Despite this, many students keen on making it to a career in life science find it burdensome to apply for higher education abroad. Scholarships, however, make these opportunities accessible to many students with the talent but little to no monetary support. There are scholarships that fund underrepresented communities as well, usually for people who have minimum participation in certain fields, like women in STEM. You need to choose what type of scholarship is suitable for you and design your application for it. Countries like the USA, UK, Canada, Germany and many South East Asian nations are popular for life science higher studies.

What are the sources of these scholarships?

Many other organizations apart from universities sponsor students for higher studies. You can apply for scholarships provided by both your government and foreign governments, provided you fit their requirements. Many NGOs, private companies, non-profits, and foundations also provide scholarships for study abroad programs. These usually require the student to fulfill specific criteria and involve agreements between the organization and the student after graduation. Popular scholarships include the Fulbright and DAAD scholarships provided by universities in the USA and Germany, government and international programs like Erasmus Mundus and Commonwealth scholarships, private and corporate funding by organizations like the Gates Foundation and biotech companies. Where should you look for the right scholarship?

Beginning to search for the right information in a plethora of articles and sites can be daunting, but the good news is that most of it is free. Initially, you can start visiting university websites to know what scholarships they offer and accept from third party organizations. There are numerous websites like ScholarshipPortal and Fastweb that guide students to their desired programs. Social media communities dedicated to higher studies abroad can also be very beneficial when it comes to queries and cooperation during the application process. Besides, you must be in constant contact with your counselor and network with professors and alumni since their experience with you is going to be essential in the application process. Look for the eligibility criteria like CGPA limits, research proposals, language proficiency tests and standardized tests while browsing.

How will you create a worthy application?

Applications usually include a Statement of Purpose written by the applicant, Letters of Recommendation from teachers or colleagues, and a CV may also be asked for. To stand out, highlight your achievements, like your CGPA, leadership qualities, vision, and keep your application well-structured. Your personal statement should be authentic and designed to the values of the scholarship provider. Your recommender must be able to speak of your achievements and performance, hence, it is best if they know you for at least a year. Tailoring the application to the scholarship’s mission is key. Achievements that contribute to  sustainability are also gaining popularity in recent years. 

Deadlines and Timeline

In order to make an optimum application, it is essential that you start early. Create a schedule for your applications and apply as early as possible. You must keep tabs on the deadlines, having them marked on your calendar helps. Double check all deadlines and timelines, go through your application to ensure you have provided all required information, and have your application revised by a trusted person.

Browse substantially and you will most likely come across a scholarship that is catered to your needs, it may not be widely known or as popular.
